Kingston SE – Lobster Town

Kingston SE (South East) is home of the Big Lobster!

There have been a couple of stops recently that claim to be the lobster pot of South Australia. While a number of fishing villages promote the availability of this crustacean in everything from fresh to pies to platters, it’s hard to argue with a town that sees fit to install a bloody great big one on the outskirts of town. Erected in the nineties, it was obviously designed to put fear into the hearts of small children arriving late at night in caravans.

Quite vicious looking.
Ready to pounce!
But looking a bit sad these days.

Just to reinforce the abundance of shell life in the town our truck was attacked by a crab this morning. Although an unsuccessful attack, no damage was done, it was definitely waving its claws about in a threatening manner. Perhaps it was aware of its attractiveness as an entree & was expressing its displeasure. Anyway, after a brief performance it hid from the sun under the front of the truck.

Fortunately, the caravan campers next door had four young fellows (all under the age of 8) that were well trained in the art of crab catching. Using specialised tools, including a broom & plastic bucket, they were able to safely capture the crab & release it into the water nearby.

Later in the morning but before the breeze picked up too much we had a very cruzie bike ride around the park & along the beach front. We managed to clock up about 20 km but have to admit that we only did about 30% of the work. Ya gotta love these e-bikes.

At last we are starting to feel like summer is here. We’ve had a couple of only slightly cloudy days and it’s been a bit warmer.

We’re camped at the Kingston SE RV Park which offers a stay for up to 6 days ($20 per 2 days) and is situated right on the beach front, adjacent to the Lions Park and walking distance from local stores.

It’s a pretty clever setup that a lot of places could replicate. You just pull up & purchase a camping ticket via the ticket machine onsite (cash, card or wave your Apple Watch) & choose your preferred site. We got that bit wrong, set up camp & then bought a ticket. There’s just no telling old RV types what to do & when!

The Kingston Foreshore Caravan park, that’s just up the road, also does a deal whereby if you want to stay a little longer they’ll do a 30% discount on Presentation of your RV ticket!

Plenty of room to spread out
