Stuck in Eighty Mile Beach

Literally stuck up to our knees in mud at one point walking on the beach at low tide. It’s a long way out the back to go for a swim.

About 1km out, looking back to shore

We attempted to walk out to the water near low tide. After about 1km I took the shot above & below.

Maybe 1km further out & the ocean is out there somewhere

Of course, once you get to the water you may have to deal with bull sharks, the odd croc & deadly stingers. So swimming in these parts is not common. Shell collecting & beach fishing are the popular pastimes here.

High tide was much prettier. But still, no one swimming…

High Tide – 80 Mile Beach

A surprising lack of road kill on the trip so far. Today was probably the most notable exception. Not so much for natural wildlife but for the amount of cattle. The last 200km were littered with many a dead cow.  Some almost reduced to skeletons, others quite fresh and some fit to burst! It kinda makes sense then that there were more than the usual numbers of “live” cattle roaming near the roads edge on this stretch as well.
The road from the highway to the Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park on the coast was 10km of red dust with some minor corrugations. Not too bad in outback terms, but enough to make the coffee machine walk a foot or so across the floor & pop the top off the soy ice cream in the freezer.
I was very happy to see the recently re-mounted microwave remained firmly in it’s place. Yet another successful tinkering job!

It was definitely not as bad as the Gibb River road, which we cunningly avoided. We heard a story of one fellow who opened his van after doing that stretch to be greeted by his fridge. It usually lived up the other end of the van.

Steady as she goes seems to be the trick. That & let your tyres down a bit if it gets real rough.

Our last stop before Port Hedland was at the DeGrey Rest Area, a free camp by the river. Another pretty spot, camped under a bridge.

Bridge over not much water

Must be happy hour.

At the end of the day…

Baked potatoes were on the menu this evening so the oven had to be preheated. Click on the image below.

Preheat oven to 280 Degrees. Add spuds much later.

More wildlife sharing our watering hole

I’m quite happy sitting here

Enough Sitting around, back on the road.
