Darwin to Kununurra

Woooo Hoooo! We’re in WA!

Darwin – Batchelor – Katherine – Timber Creek – Kununurra

We knew it would happen eventually but it’s taken a while.

You get some interesting vehicles on the road outback.

Two Russian Sidecars – Made in Siberia

These Russian URAL bikes were well set up. The major piece of luggage in the sidecar was a fridge as big as the one we have in the Landcruiser. If these guys die of thirst in the desert at least their last sip will be well chilled.

We were a little anxious about crossing the border into WA & passing quarantine  as we had heard some horror stories, but it all went well. Luckily we had a happy officer called “Lisa Jolly”. She was cheerful yet thorough. We’d cleared all of the prohibed stuff earlier but had to say goodbye to our Tassie honey. We ran into her later in Coles & showed her our new honey. It made her chuckle and she give us a “those crazy nomads” look.

Today during the drive Jayne played spot the Boab tree.

There are some really old & big ones out there in the wild. There’s even one in captivity at Wyndham caravan park. It’s over 2000 years old, stands 20 metres tall and has a trunk 5 metres wide!

BTBC! ( Boab Tree Before Christ)

We dropped into the Kimberly Pink Diamond shop to have a sticky beak. I found an embarrassingly small pair of pink diamond ear rings for Jayne. As they were a bit small & only $118,000 I didn’t bother. Maybe next lap.

Temp is still around the low 30s but it’ll get a bit cooler as the sun goes down.

Lily Creek Lagoon – Kununurra

We are both suffering a bit from some jet lag tonight coping with the WA 1.5hr time difference from NT. We now have to stay up 2 hours longer tonight. 6:30pm feels like bedtime. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz…

  1. Welcome to the Wild West! As you arrive, we leave…Flying out to the States on Sunday for 3 months. I’m sure you’ll be around when we get back- there’s sooo much to see & do (& surf!) Stay north of Carnarvon until at least the end of August much further south is too cold :). Exmouth, Waroora, Gnaraloo & The Bluff should keep you busy surfing! Have fun!!!
