MONA & Treasure Island Pong

How lucky were we to find a caravan park right next to the Museum of Old & New Art (MONA)? The Treasure Island Caravan Park, a true gem. From here you just walk a couple of hundred metres along the foreshore, past the water treatment works & up a grassy knoll & there you are at MONA. Yep. A Water Treatment Works…
It was the only dampener on our stay at Treasure Island, other than the persistent rain. When the wind blew from that direction, it was a little bit on the pong.
But it was far enough away from MONA & the Moorilla Vineyard not to be a problem.
So other than that it was fine. Actually the weather wasn’t fine, it rained a lot. The park was also overrun with ducks & rabbits

Where’s my dinner?

But a wet day is a great day for ducks and a great day to spend in a museum. We spent about 6 hrs crawling all over MONA. See http://www.mona.net.au for more.
We had a fascinating time looking at & reading all about the exhibits in the place. Some things on show were quite out there… Parental guidance recommended.

We covered an awful lot of ground

We really did more than the map above shows as the tracking seems to stop when you don’t have the Opod on.

At the beginning of the visit you are given an Opod (modified iPod) that tracks your path about the place & provides information on all the exhibits that you are near.

David Walsh, the owner of MONA has a wicked sense of humour in all things to do with his museum. Including his & hers car parks.

Wine tasting at Moorilla Vineyard followed (the vineyard was there onsite before MONA was built). The wine was very fine but we were both a bit tired by then to fully appreciate the experience, so we bought a few to try later.

The day after MONA we did a wet wander about the Salamanca Markets which was still busy in spite of the weather.

Wear the fox hat?

Maybe not a fox hat but the markets had hats a plenty.

Later that night we had tea with some of our Hobartian extended family. Kim & David treated us to a fabulous home cooked dinner & some fine Tassie Wines. Gus, the biggest, furriest, labradoodle we’ve ever seen, was on his best behaviour.

We’re now free camping at Mayfield Bay Conservation Area with views to Freycinet Peninsula.
It’s just south of Swansea (do any of these names sound familiar to you Newy people?)

We’ve caught up with our surfing friends, Samantha & Glenn
(http://penguintalesoz.wordpress.com) so a cross country adventure or even possibly a surf is guaranteed in the next few days.

Jayne’s gettin on with her knitting & it’s only a matter of days before the new creation will be complete.
