First Speared Fish of Trip

The fortune spent on the spear fishing gear has finally paid off. Yesterday the first fish of the trip was caught while spear fishing (it’s only been about 30 years since my last catch)

It may be a morwong. My fish identification skills need some work.

The spear fishing process also took me a bit by surprise. It was a case of “Golly, I didn’t miss, there’s a fish on the end of my spear. Now what’ll I do?” The frantic activity that followed while retrieving the fish included a moment where it looked like I’d be completely tangled & bound in the float line, spear gun line, weight belt, fins, snorkel & fishy bits. I imagined that later that day I’d be found washed up & flapping on the shore when the kiddies came down to the beach to feed the sting rays at dusk.

All ended well & fishy quickly turned into a couple of fillets for tea. Marinated in a bit of ginger, kecap manis & white wine, then grilled. Jayne smashed some potatoes & some zucchini was fried. We even used the very last of our lime from the Burwood St lime tree to celebrate the occasion.

My hunting & gathering status has been restored.

Good job the prawn truck turned up today!
