Did some free camping on the way south to Ningaloo via Exmouth. Some spots are busier than others. This one had a few spots left.
So we’re out here all alone and that’s when the aliens came to abduct us. Lucky I had the camera set up to record their arrival.
I’d set the camera up for a 30 second exposure & 10 seconds in a car drives past. The only car all night. Great effect. There are heaps of stars in the background but nothing compared to what we could see. This camp spot was one of our darkest camps to date & the number of stars was just stunning.
Back on the road for more driving. Sometimes we need to get off the road to let a truck pass.
Today was the first surf on the West Coast.
Getting to the surf here is a bit like goin for a surf in Tassie. It’s a mission! Except the water is much much warmer.
We had just set up camp at the Ningaloo Lighthouse Caravan Park and I was keen to see the water so we wasted little time & headed up the road to have a look. With the lighthouse behind us we could see waves breaking on a bommie about 500 metres out. It looked pretty small until we finally spotted a couple of guys surfing. In true WA form the waves were anything from 4′ to about 6′. But first you need to walk along a coral beach for 500m. Then paddle 500m to the reef break. Waves were running for 300-400 metres left. Once exhausted you then need to paddle 500m back to land. Where are my “Kooks on Tour” mates from Tassie when I need em? I can see why you guys love this place.
After a couple of waves it became apparent that my surfing fitness needs a bit of work. But this is probably a great place to practice.
Later in the afternoon we went up to the lighthouse to watch our first WA sunset into the sea. Lots of whales about. Hopefully over the next couple of days we’ll do some whale shark diving.Another beautiful sunset.
We might just hang around here for a little while.
