Yaba Daba Jabiru

On the way into Jabiru we stopped at Gunlom Falls for what the sign said was a “2km round trip hike” with an option for a swim in a Rockpool in the middle or at the end. Well, it wasn’t a round trip at all. It was pretty much a kilometre straight up – pretty pools – then a kilometre straight down, but really worth the effort.

In some parts the trail was just a gap in the rocks.

Looking back from the top pool

No crocs here… this week.

We did have a good soak in the pool at the top. More beautiful country everywhere we look.

Gunlom lookout was near the top just before you walk down a bit further to the much needed refreshment of the cool pools.

Wefie on High

At the end of the walk we got back to the car to discover that it was a bit warm.

Just a bit hot for hiking

Perhaps we should get outta bed earlier and do this sort of thing in the cool of the morning when it’s only about 32 degrees!

We were lucky enough to see a couple of Jabiru while in this area. We’d seen one on a previous trip, from above, when in the helicopter. It was standing in it’s nest high in a treetop. The nests are ginormous. We spotted the one below while on a walk at Ubirr. It’s hard to see but it’s right on the left hand edge of the big rock. They stand so still we thought it was a sculpture at first but it eventually turned around.

Jabiru – off in the distance

They are a really big bird. Squint & you might just see it. If you can’t, it’s still a nice landscape.
Ubirr was another less vertical wander about the area on the edge of Arnhem Land with views over a massive floodplain.

This walking route has a lot of indigenous rock art all about.
