Over The Top

After 9 days we finally left the Wild West Coast behind & headed for the hills, South East. Today we travelled about 190km from Marrawah to Waratah, via Corinna. Over 120km of this was on gravel road.

The drive was wet, windy & misty for most of the way.

Here we are admiring the view some where in the middle of the misty mountains. Spectacular view… Probably.

It’s raining lightly & very grey. The whole rig was covered in white gravelly mud. There’s a cleanish streak on the back of the van where I’d rinsed the rear view camera.

Lunch at Corinna Pub was great

Our rig parked near the Corinna ferry on/off point

Corinna Pub

Yeah, there’s no way we’re gunna fit on that thing.

The guy looking after the ferry was ferry keen to get us aboard. He even produced the official 9m piece of rope to measure the distance between our wheel axles. We were about a metre over.

The ferry (punt) is rated at 6.5 tonnes. Although the occasional 9 tonne Winnebago has made the crossing, safely, allegedly…

Driving thru more forest

Busy Road

Still Busy

During the day we passed about 6 vehicles, 2 pademelon & one white bellied eagle. No road kill! This was our first “road kill free” day in Tassie.

This has also been our longest stint with the van off the bitumen. Van wise, we had a couple of casualties.
One of the draws fell out. The latch had been a bit dodgy from day one, so now it’ll get fixed, proper (Once the 100 mile an hour tape wears out) A bottle of port broke. Luckily it drained out a floor joint so not as big a mess as it could have been. A loose screw in the shower. (As in a screw fell out of the shower recess). The front loader washing machine moved a bit. Some bruised fruit & a throughly filthy van at the end of the day. Still raining….
Might go to the pub for tea.

  1. So did you have a punt ride? Are you heading to MOFO in hobart?

    • No MOFO this time. We will spend a couple of days at MONA when we eventually do get to Hobart. We’re too big for the punt but will be back in a few days from the other side with just the cruiser to do a river cruise & will punt it then.
